A Filmmaker’s guide on how to smash the London videography market

“Being asked to go on the us people podcast was an awesome experience” writes Josh Cawthorn, Freelance Videographer London.

We covered many topics including my experience of the industry, working with Beyonce and the highs and lows of the videography world. Since going on the podcast I felt I needed to write this blog and go over how important the first steps are. ..

Step 1: Shadow someone / become a runner,

Gaining work experience is vital. You need to start somewhere so shadowing the right person is vital. Failing that become a runner. I got to meet and work alongside Beyonce and Jay-Z. To make things even more awesome i got to also work alongside directors such as Ridley Scott and Director X. Being a runner teaches you an extra level of professionalism that never leaves you. It gives you a motivation feeling and makes you feel confident moving forward to the next one. That feeling of why am I here in this room with Beyonce? Well, You are the best at what you do, that’s why you’re in the room.

Step 2: Get to know your camera.

Your camera is your weapon, know it like the palm of your hand. Once you know your camera , know your other kit. Do you fly a drone? If so get better and better at it. There is the work out there so get flying and get the practice. You can see our drone videography work on our travel page. You can see our camera work on our camera man page

Step 3: Build you’r showreel.

As a videographer your showreel is your shop front. It must say everything about you as a videographer. This is your’e best foot forward. Go hard or go home.

Step 4: Be confident with it.

You are now a videographer! This is your title, So when asked remember you must own this. I am a videographer - said confidently. If you do not believe in yourself how can you expect anybody else too.
